London’s Oxford Street Estate – an 89-metre stretch flanked by designer boutiques, flagship stores and listed buildings between North Audley Street to Balderton Street.

Visited by up to half a million people every day, it’s got a reputation to uphold. Lighting Design International made sure to emphasise the buildings’ best features, unifying the buildings and drawing in retailers and shoppers.

acdc’s PLAZA was the ideal product for the job.

On the red brick buildings, PLAZA 10 in 2,700K gave a warm glow, picking up on textures. The narrow beams created shadow and highlights on vertical features, while window reveals were illuminated perfectly. The high-performing FINO’s ultra-compact profile worked in perfect harmony with the PLAZA, creating a stunning effect.

Lighter stone buildings with darker columns needed a different approach. An intentional change in colour temperature (PLAZA 10’s in 3,000k) preserved the lighter finish and made these buildings a focal point.

Attention to detail

Safeguarding the street’s architectural beauty was paramount.

Luminaires had to be unobtrusive and cabling hidden. (That’s where acdc’s attention to detail came in handy!).

Fittings were RAL finished, with products colour matched to their mounting surfaces. Comfort was key, too, so snoots and matte black louvres protected pedestrians and occupants from glare.

A lit effect that’s enhanced the street’s presence and charisma – as much style on the outside of the buildings as the fashion contained within.
