Principal Hotel, Edinburgh
The Grade II-listed Principal Edinburgh George St. hotel was built in 1775 as a home for the city’s most affluent citizens.

In a huge multi-million pound refurbishment project, the hotel has transformed both its interior and exterior (but retained its Scottish charm).
The project’s goal was to create a sense of restored grandeur. Part of that meant accenting the façade’s architectural elements. Fittings had to be discreet, lighting pollution kept to a minimum and energy savings maximised.
By using a family of acdc’s PLAZA luminaires, different effects were created across the hotel’s frontage. All while maintaining a consistent look, feel and colour temperature (2700k).
Custom RAL finishes camouflaged a number of PLAZA 10 and 20’s with 10° optics that were picking out the building’s detail and glare shields and cowls minimised light spill.
At the hotel’s entrance, PLAZA 10s on custom arm brackets were used to downlight archway elements, with PLAZA 20s up-lighting the main pillars.
The finishing touch?
A DALI dimmable system so the whole scheme could be controlled with ease. A whole new lease of life for this historic gem.
