The Principal Hotel is a prominent grade II listed building in Bloomsbury’s Russell Square.

The important first step was to understand how the building was viewed from Russell Square.
Knowing that trees partially blocked views of the building, we repeated lighting effects at high-level, creating linear compositions which framed and defined the façade.
This scheme emphasised the hotels dominance in Russell Square, but also created smaller areas of interest that would catch the attention of guests and pedestrians.
Lighting tests eased any worries about the hotel’s terracotta exterior – confirming that 2700K was the right choice for this project.
acdc PLAZA 10 luminaires up-lit tall columns from ground level, while turquoise turrets were washed in light from PLAZA 20 floodlights.
To limit any damage to the 19th century building, all light fittings were surface mounted and cabling hidden out of sight within the architectural nooks and crannies.
